A Second Chance at Life: The Marvels of Kidney Transplantation
November 2023
The obsession with fair skin and the excessive use of fairness creams and skin-lightening cosmetic products has always been a common trend in our society. However, many people remain unaware of the severe health risks these products can cause. The unregulated use of low- quality beauty products often leads to serious medical complications. One of the most alarming issues is the rise in kidney diseases caused by toxic skincare products.
Our kidneys are bean-shaped organs located on either side of the spine, responsible for cleansing the blood and removing toxins from the body through urine. Research has shown that many substandard fairness creams contain high levels of heavy metals like mercury, which can severely damage internal organs—especially the liver and kidneys.
Several studies conducted in India and abroad support this finding. One of the most notable studies was led by renowned nephrologists Dr. Ranjith Narayanan and Dr. Sajeesh Sivasdas (Aster MIMS Kottakkal).
They discovered membranous nephropathy, a condition in which the kidneys leak abnormal amounts of protein, in unusually high numbers among young individuals. This finding prompted further investigation. Over a two-year study involving fifteen affected patients, they found that thirteen of them were regular users of low-quality fairness creams.
Testing revealed that the levels of mercury in their blood and urine were nearly ten times higher than normal. Chemical analysis of the creams they used showed mercury levels 10,000 to 20,000 times higher than permitted limits. Kidney biopsies of these patients showed damage to the glomeruli (the kidney’s filtering units), and they tested positive for an antibody called NELL-1, typically associated with heavy-metal–induced kidney injury.
Most affected patients showed symptoms like frothy urine, swelling around the eyes and legs, and fatigue. One patient even developed paralysis.
When mercury accumulates in the kidney’s filtering structures, it binds to proteins and forms an "antigen." This triggers the body’s immune system to attack these kidney structures, causing severe damage. As a result, the body loses large amounts of:
This leads to complications such as:
Many global and Indian studies have confirmed the link between mercury-containing cosmetics and serious kidney disorders. Modern testing methods now make it easier to identify these harmful chemicals in skincare products, including traditional medicines and herbal products, which are often assumed to be safe.
Only early diagnosis, discontinuation of the toxic product, and timely medical treatment can ensure recovery. The government must enforce strict quality control, detailed safety evaluations, and regulation of cosmetic products widely available to the public.
As consumers, we must use our critical thinking and awareness when choosing skincare products. At the same time, strong regulatory frameworks and strict government monitoring are essential to prevent kidney diseases caused by toxic cosmetic ingredients. Only then can we curb the dangerous health impacts of harmful fairness creams and skin-lightening products.
